A family-run business since 1989, Sun & Sand foregoes cliché Westernized Indian dishes churned out alongside sitar-heavy tunes in lieu of a more authentic approach, but with a contemporary twist. Expect tantalizing family recipes passed down through generations, attentive service, and a sleek and trendy atmosphere.
Steeped in tradition, yet thoroughly modern, Sun & Sand presents a dynamic pairing of South Asian and East African flavours.
The owners are descendants of the Indian diaspora to East Africa during the time of the British Empire over 150 years ago. So, when they saw a void in the Finchley Central Indian restaurant scene, they sought to fill it with their love of Indian East African cuisine.

The enticing menu features a wide variety — over 80 to choose from — of authentically prepared dishes and recipes passed down through generations. Meat, fish, and vegetarian options are available with a focus on the freshest herbs and spices.
Start with slow-cooked small plates, such as chicken tikka or tandoori mushrooms, followed by flavourful curries, like karahi lamb and mutter paneer. Dishes range from mild to extra hot but can be adjusted depending on palate and preference.

HISTORY OF OUR FOOD
Indians in East Africa
The presence of Indians in Kenya and Uganda can be traced back to the 17th century, but British colonial rule prompted mass migration and expanded business opportunities for Indians in East Africa. While a wave of mainly Sikhs and those from Punjab were brought over to help build the Kenya-Uganda Railway, the majority returned to their home country after the contract ended.
However, the introduction of the railway opened East Africa for trade, and an influx of emigrants, both Hindu and Muslim, and mainly from Gujarat, arrived after the railway laborers had left. Industrious as ever, they set up trading posts and became traders and merchants of East Africa.
Indian & East African Cuisine
The Indian influence could be seen in many aspects of Kenyan and Ugandan culture and particularly in the cuisine, which became a vibrant intermingling of flavours. Even today, many North and South Indian classics—such as chapati, samosas, curries, and chutneys—are staples in the Kenyan and Ugandan diet. Sun & Sand brings this slice of home with dine-in, takeaway and delivery options to not only the large Indian East African population in Finchley Central but to all those who delight in mouth-watering flavours.

Chef Ramesh was born in Mumbai, India and worked his way up the line in high-end hotels and restaurants in India’s City of Dreams before moving to the UK 10 years ago.
